How To Avoid Jetlag

How to Avoid Jetlag

You may experience jetlag if you fly just a couple of time zones let alone flying half way across the world.  However, there are some things that you can do before, during and after you fly to help prevent and fight jetlag.

  1. Adjust your schedule a few days before you fly.  Stay up later, sleep in later, etc.
  2. Avoid rich foods before you board.
  3. Get plenty of rest the night before your flight.
  4. Exercise before you board the plane.  I know you are thinking how - I have to finish packing, drive to the airport, get parking, go thru security, etc.  But my answer is exercise while you are at the airport.  Now you are asking how.  By taking the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator, walk instead of riding the train, walk instead of riding on the moving walk way.
  5. Drink water and more water!  This is the number one thing that you can do.
  6. If you are someone who can sleep on the plane then do so this will help.
  7. If however, you are like me and cannot sleep on a plane even in Global First then exercise while you are sitting in your seat.
    1. shrug your shoulders
    2. crunch those abs
    3. raise those toes
    4. stretch your legs
  8. Pack ear buds/phones, neck pillow, eye mask, blanket, etc. whatever that will help you sleep on the plane.
  9. Drink water oh wait I already mentioned it okay but I want to make sure you know how important it is to drink water.
  10. After you land do what the locals do.  Meaning if you land in the morning then stay awake all day - no napping!  And of course drink water.  It will be a long day but the following day you should be on the right time zone and your vacation will be awesome!

Now that you have read some of my tips you may be wondering how I know all this.  First, I will tell you I am a Travel Agent and I read a whole lot about travel and I travel a lot.  I am also a former flight attendant.  Okay, you want more proof than than my word then just look around at flight crew when you are at an airport.  You will see 90% or more with a bottle of water and they walk as much as possible (they have a lot of bags with them).  If you didn't notice before I bet you do now.
